The Asheville Fire Department enforces the N.C. Fire Code and recommends leaving fireworks to the professionals, according to its fireworks safety page:

  • Legal: novelty items that do not explode, fly, spin or leave the ground, such as fountains, smoke devices, snappers, glowworms, sparklers, poppers and snakes.
  • Illegal: anything that explodes or is projected into the air, including roman candles, firecrackers, aerial fireworks and bottle rockets. Sky lanterns are illegal.

If you use legal fireworks, the department says to keep water nearby, never let children use lighters, be mindful of pets and use them only on private property.
