Same-day registration

If you are not registered in Buncombe County, you can register and vote at the same time at any early voting site. Registered voters can also update a name or address there, the county says on its early voting page. Same-day registration is not available on Election Day.

Election Day

On Nov. 3, polls are open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and you must vote at your assigned polling place, not an early voting site. Look yours up in the state’s Voter Search under “Your Voting Locations.” The same tool shows your sample ballot, your party affiliation and the status of an absentee ballot.

Photo ID

North Carolina voters are asked to show a photo ID, the State Board of Elections says. Most people show a driver’s license; a state ID from the NCDMV and several other IDs also count. Every voter can vote with or without an ID: a voter who cannot show one fills out an ID Exception Form.

Voting by mail

Any registered North Carolina voter can request a mail-in absentee ballot with no excuse needed, through the state’s Vote by Mail page. Requests are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 20, and the ballot must be back by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. Include a copy of your photo ID or an ID Exception Form with the ballot envelope.
