Where it is
The plan says Kenilworth “lies on the southeast facing slopes of Beaucatcher Mountain and is flanked by three major roadways: Biltmore Avenue, Tunnel Road and Swannanoa River Road.” The plan calls it Asheville’s “Pioneer Suburb,” founded in 1914 by three developers, and “was itself a town, until it was annexed by Asheville in 1929,” led before annexation by Leah Chiles, “North Carolina’s first woman mayor.” Its landmarks include the Kenilworth Inn, Zealandia and the Cedar Crest Inn, all on the National Register of Historic Places, and the South Asheville Cemetery, which the plan calls “the oldest public African-American cemetery in western North Carolina.”
The city places Kenilworth in its Central planning area. All four points we checked, around Kenilworth Park, Kenilworth Lake and the neighborhood’s north and south ends, were inside the city limits on the Census Bureau’s geocoder.
Schools
Kenilworth is in Asheville City Schools. All four points fell in the city district on Buncombe County’s school district map layer. The district offers school choice at every grade level, according to its enrollment office.
